This course will introduce the student to the concepts, rules and regulations of medical collections with the combination of medical law and ethics. Students will learn the systematic approach to common billing office practices that will include collection processes and procedures as it relates to physician, hospital and third-party payer collections during the first half of the quarter. The second half of the quarter will be focused on the combination of those collection efforts with medical law and ethics. Students will be introduced to the legal, moral and ethical issues that arise within the medical community. Half of the course will include an overview of laws and ethics that is related to patient care as well as the application and practice of collection practices through the use of case studies and other simulated exercises. Upon completion, students should be able to apply policies and procedures for access and disclosure of Protected Health Information and legal requirements of the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act by promoting ethical standards. Students are expected to become HIPAA certified upon completion of this course.
